Samir Nasri scored twice to give Arsenal a 2-1 victory over defending champion Manchester United on Saturday, revitalizing its Premier League title bid and alleviating the pressure on manager Arsene Wenger.

The France midfielder struck in the 22nd and 48th minutes at Emirates Stadium to snap a three-match winless streak in all competitions and lift the Gunners over Man United into third place in the standings.

Arsenal held on during six minutes of injury time after Rafael da Silva pulled a goal back for United in the 90th.

“I knew today that it was a big game for the future of the team … to keep in the race and knowing you can win big games is vital,” said Wenger, who has faced criticism about his 12-year record at the club. “It was a very important result. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened if we had lost today.”

The Gunners had drawn 0-0 with Fenerbahce in the Champions League, been held 4-4 by fierce rival Tottenham and lost 2-1 at Stoke in their last three games.

The victory was even sweeter for Wenger, who is without a league title since 2004, because it came exactly 22 years after Alex Ferguson first took charge of United.
