Oscar Cardozo scored twice to help Benfica earn a UEFA Cup place after a 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League Group D on Tuesday.

Shakhtar had hoped to reach the knockout stages for the first time but needed a victory, coupled with a Celtic defeat at already-qualified AC Milan, to go through.

The Scottish champions lost 1-0 in Italy but Shakhtar could not take advantage by overcoming a determined Benfica team and it was Celtic who claimed a place in the last 16.

"We expected it to be a hard clash and that's why we're really happy with qualifying for the UEFA Cup," Benfica coach Jose Antonio Camacho told reporters.
