Schalke 04 vs Rosenborg 3-1 Goal Highlights Champions League 11-12-2007
Scorers
Schalke 04: Gerald Asamoah 12, Rafinha 19, Kevin Kuranyi 36
Rosenborg Trondheim: Yssouf Kone 23
Halftime: 3-1; Attendance: 53,000
Schalke 04 reached the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time when they rediscovered their scoring touch to beat Rosenborg Trondheim 3-1 on Tuesday.
Schalke had managed just two goals in five previous matches in Group B but were soon in command, with Gerald Asamoah and Rafinha putting them 2-0 up by the 19th minute.
Rosenborg needed a draw to clinch a place in the first knockout round and Yssouf Kone's goal gave them renewed hope in the 23rd minute.
But Schalke always looked dangerous and they restored their two-goal cushion with Kevin Kuranyi's accurate shot nine minutes before the break.
Victory for the Germans, who had failed to progress beyond the group phase in two previous appearances in the Champions League, took them through as runners-up behind Chelsea.
"It's fantastic that we've done it at last," coach Mirko Slomka told reporters. "It's a great success for the team and the whole club. I think for tonight we'll forget about the game we've got coming up at the weekend and just enjoy ourselves."
DUISBURG DISCO
Schalke had been distracted in the build-up to the most important match of their season, with three players -- Mladen Krstajic, Ivan Rakitic and Jermaine Jones -- caught partying in a Duisburg disco in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Krstajic and Rakitic were chucked out of the squad (Jones was suspended in any case) but it was clear they had more than enough quality to at least match the 2-0 win they enjoyed in Norway earlier in the campaign.
They got the start they wanted when Carlos Grossmueller played a free kick low into the middle in the 12th minute and Asamoah deftly prodded the ball wide of the keeper, via a slight deflection from Roar Strand.
Rafinha then scored the pick of the goals, playing a one-two with Kuranyi on his way into the area, beating one defender and then shooting back inside the keeper's near post.
A mistake gave Rosenborg a way back into the game.
Alexander Tettey sent over a high and harmless-looking cross from the left but Heiko Westermann mis-timed his jump, leaving the unmarked Kone to control and smash the ball home.
The Germans were getting frustrated before Kuranyi squeezed in a shot after good build-up play to give them breathing space.
Schalke spent much of the second half passing the ball about harmlessly. They had just one nervous moment when Steffen Iversen cracked a long-range shot just over the bar.
