Sevilla claimed their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League and went top of Group H when they ended Arsenal's unbeaten run this season with a 3-1 comeback win on Tuesday.

Already qualified Arsenal took an early lead in a pulsating match at the Sanchez Pizjuan when Croatia striker Eduardo da Silva steered a close-range shot past keeper Andres Palop from a tight angle after a neatly-worked move down the right.

But Sevilla hit back with a thundering strike from midfielder Seydou Keita midway through the half and a clever glancing header from leading scorer Luis Fabiano 11 minutes before the break.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Frederic Kanoute wrapped up a memorable win with a penalty two minutes from time after he had been bundled over.

The win left Sevilla top on 12 points, two clear of Arsenal with one game left to play. The Andalucians visit Slavia Prague in their final match, while Arsenal are at home to Steaua Bucharest.

Premier League leaders Arsenal had the upper hand in the early stages with midfielder Emmanuel Eboue causing early problems for Sevilla fullback Jose Angel Crespo on the right.

And it was a move that began on the right flank that ended with Eduardo putting Arsenal in front in the 11th minute.

TIGHT ANGLE

Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner floated a cross in towards the far post after he latched on to a neat back-heeled pass down the line, Eduardo controlled the ball with his chest and steered in past Palop from a tight angle.

The home side struggled to match the athletic Arsenal midfield at first, but they retained their composure and Keita took advantage of an error by Philippe Senderos to equalise after a razor-sharp counter-attack midway through the half.

The Mali midfielder snapped up a loose ball just outside the area after Arsenal failed to deal with a cross from the right and sent an unstoppable left-foot drive fizzing into the back of the net to become the first player to score against Arsenal in the Champions League this season.

The goal gave Sevilla a new lease of life and they took the lead 10 minutes later when Luis Fabiano stole a march on the Arsenal defence to score with a clever glancing header after Daniel Alves had clipped a free kick into the area.

The Andalucians should have added a third just before the break, Kanoute lashing past the post after Manuel Almunia had parried a fierce drive from Luis Fabiano.

Arsenal fought back hard at the start of the second half and it took some sharp interventions from the Sevilla centre backs to stop the Londoners drawing level before the hour.

Sevilla had several chances, too, with striker Luis Fabiano going close from close range but it was Kanoute who added the third with a coolly struck penalty after he had been hauled down by Bacary Sagna and Denilson as he charged into the area in the final minute.
