Italy finished top of Euro 2008 qualifying Group B after coasting to a 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands on Wednesday.

Defender Frodi Benjaminsen turned Massimo Oddo's low cross into his own net after 10 minutes before Luca Toni scored with a stylish strike on the turn after Fabio Grosso's cross had fallen kindly for him when it bounced off Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Juve centre back Giorgio Chiellini then surged out of defence to thunder home an unstoppable shot from outside the area five minutes from the break.

Rogvi Jacobsen had several chances for the Faroes and grabbed a deserved goal with a header on 83 minutes while Johan Davidsen struck a post late on as Italy eased up in the second half.

World champions Italy, who qualified for next year's finals by winning 2-1 in Scotland on Saturday, made eight changes for the largely-meaningless game and handed a debut to Juventus winger Raffaele Palladino.

'This campaign was good and I'm really satisfied,' Italy coach Roberto Donadoni told Rai television.

The match was the first major game in Italy since soccer-related riots across cities two Sundays ago but there were no incidents with around 1,500 children brought in to create a party atmosphere as Italy celebrated qualification.

Italy could have scored more than three in the first half with visiting keeper Jakup Mikkelsen pulling off two excellent saves to deny a Toni header and Palladino's low shot.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro picked up his 113th cap, surpassing Dino Zoff's 112, but he is still some way from matching Paolo Maldini's Italian record of 126.

The Real Madrid centre back and his fellow defenders were busier than they might have expected though with the plucky islanders, who only lost 2-1 to Italy at home to June, showing improvement despite finishing bottom of the group on no points.
